From July 13th to July 15th, co-hosted by China Concrete and Cement-based Products Association(CCPA) and WUT and directed by Teaching Steering Committee of Materials Specialty in Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education, Sobute Cup — the 6th National College Students’ Concrete Material Design Competition was successfully held in WUT. Initiated by CCPA, the National College Students’ Concrete Material Design Competition is a science and technology competition held every two years for all Chinese college students majoringin inorganic non-metallic materials and civil engineering. With 144 teams from 80 universities nationwide participating in this competition, including WUT(Wuhan University of Technology), WHU(Wuhan University), HUST(Huazhong University of Science and Technology), HIT(Harbin Institute of Technology), Tongji(Tongji University), CSU(Central South University), SCUT(South China University of Technology), CQU(Chongqing University), BUCEA(Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture), there comes the largest scale of this competition in this year.
The opening ceremony of this competition was held in the stadium of Nanhu Campus on the morning of July 14th. Xu Yongmo, CEO of China Association of Concrete and Cement Products, Zhang Qingjie, the academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of WUT, Zeng Qingdong, the secretary general of CCPA, Geng Lin, the secretary general of Teaching Steering Committee of Materials Specialty of the Ministry of Education and the dean of School of Materials Science and Engineering of HIT, Liu Jiaping, Chairman of the Working Committee of Education and Human Resources and the professor of Southeast University, Hu Shuguang, the chief professor of WUT, and the related functional department heads attended the opening ceremony.

On behalf of the organizers, Zhang Qingjie, President of WUT, gave the earnest welcome in his speech to all the teachers and students engaged in the competition. He pointed out that the National College Students’ Concrete Material Design Competition was initiated and developed under the Dual Carbon policy. It adheres to the strategy of strengthening the country through science and technology, talent, and innovation and effectively prompts the massive young students to integrate the theoretical knowledge with their experimental practices.

Xu Yongmo, CEO of CCPA , pointed out that as one of the necessary structural materials of architecture and civil engineering, the concrete material provides a crucial support for the development of roads, bridges, airports, railways, highways, architectures, tunnels, ports, etc. He stated that National College Students’ Concrete Material Design Competition provided students with a warm-up before they worked in this industry, and the development of concrete materials and technology would make great contributions to build China into a country that has great strength in both manufacturing and construction industry.

Geng Lin, the secretary general of Teaching Steering Committee of Materials Specialty of the Ministry of Education and the dean of School of Materials Science and Engineering of HIT, pointed out in his speech that the competition played a significant role in enhancing and building up college students’ innovative and practical ability. Meanwhile, it also examined students’ grasp and application of professional knowledge and trained students’ ability of teamwork, providing an important platform for students to practice to tackle complex engineering problems.

After the opening ceremony, Hu Shuguang, chief professor of WUT, doctoral advisor and deputy director of State Key Laboratory of SilicateMaterials for Architectures, delivered a keynote report entitled "Innovative Design and Development of High-tech Concrete" to the participants, and provided some suggestions on the innovation direction and methods of high-tech concrete combining with technological innovation cases.
On the morning of July 15th, the closing ceremony and award ceremony were held. Zeng Qingdong, secretary general of CCPA, Wang Fazhou, Vice President of WUT, and other leading guests attended and presented awarded to winners.
After the two-day’s competition, including the theoretical examination and practical operation, the review committee made a strict assessment. Finally, 5 group special prizes, 12 group first prizes, 22 group second prizes, 37 group third prizes, 1 individual special prize, and 13 practical skills awards were selected. Meanwhile, 20 institutions won the award of excellent organization, and 75 teachers won the award of excellent instructors. During the competition, the "cement-based material creative works exhibition" was held.According to the voteof the participating teachers and students and scores given by experts, 1 first prize, 2 second prizes, and 4 third prizes of the exhibition were selected. Teams of WUT won 1 group special prize and 2 group first prizes in this competition.

At the closing ceremony, Han Jianguo,the deputy director of the competition organization committee, the secretary general of the CCPA Education and Human Resources Committee, and the teacher of Tsinghua University, gave the technical comments. Mr. Han expressed his gratitude to Wuhan University of Technology, to members of the competition organization, and to all referees and volunteers for their thoughtful, rigorous and enthusiastic organization. He also pointed out that all participating students hadconsolidated their theoretical knowledge and improved their practical skills through the competition.
The hands-on operation site of the competition
It is reported that the design theme of this competition is to use machine-made sand to prepare C40 flow concrete based on the principle of improving the durability of concrete, while considering the engineering application environment and the economy, so as to show college students’ ability to solve complex engineering problems. The competition consists of two parts: theoretical tests and practical operations. Practical operations contain the concrete mix design, site mixing, working performance test and strength specimen preparation. At the same time, senior experts and scholars of this industry were invited to make academic presentations during the competition. And activities such as the second council of the third session of the CCPA Education and Human Resources Working Committee, the Special Aggregate Concrete Technology Seminar and the "Cement-based Material Creative Works Exhibition" were also held.
