As Wuhan entered fall with fine drizzle, 2021 freshmen of WUT had their first class in the university. On the afternoon of October 10th, the opening ceremony for 2021 undergraduates was held at South Lake Campus Sports Center.

The ceremony began with the solemn Chinese national anthem.

Zhang Qingjie, President of WUT, gave “the first lecture” under the title of “Drawing on Great Power and Enriching the Spirit of Excellence”. He said that 2021 freshmen were enrolled in the year of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the CPC, and by 2050 when China would become a prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced, harmonious, and beautiful modern socialist country, the students who were enrolled and grew up in the extremely exceptional phase of China’s development would be witnesses and builders to realize the Chinese dream of national rejuvenation. And this was the special historical mission and responsibility on these new students.

President Zhang Qingjie hoped that 2021 undergraduates would draw on great power and enrich the spirit of excellence to write magnificent chapters of their own on the journey of realizing the Chinese dream of national rejuvenation, taking the oath of “Party, please count on me on the way to a stronger country” as a belief, the WUT spirit of “Sound in Morality, Broad in Learning and Pursuing Excellence” as a guide, and the motto of "Morally Upright and Highly Educated" as a motive.

Xin Sijin, Chairman of the WUT University Council badged the freshman representative. All the freshmen wore badges in the presence of the teachers and started their new journey in WUT.

Liao Hong, a professor from School of Natural Sciences who was awarded the Teacher of Year 2021 in Hubei Province and Model Individual of Hubei Province, delivered a speech as the faculty representative. She called on the freshmen to elevate their thoughts rather thanrote learning; to transcend themselvesrather than just compare with others, and to make well-organized planrather than last-minute preparation. It’s her hope that all students cherish their life in campus and create their own stories in WUT.

Du Zihao, from School of Transportation and Logistics Engineering, made a speech as the freshman representative. He said that he would strive for excellence through working hard andpracticing, so as to achieve his dream and, live up to WUT’s motto“Sound in morality, broad in learning and pursuing excellence”

All the students stood up and loudlyexpressed their love to WUT, to the great Party and to the great motherland. Their powerful voice echoed in the South Lake Campus Stadium.

Lastly, the event concluded in the chorus of Ode to the Motherland. From now on, these freshman’s new journey of pursuing excellence just begin.
