On May 10th, the 111th International Nurses Day celebration and Skills Contest of Nucleic Acid Sampling, organized by WUT Union and WUT Hospital, was held at the Union Center in West Campus. Wang Shijie, the Vice President, and Hu Min, the Deputy Director of Wuchang District Health Commission attended the event. Heads of Health Commission of Wucchang District and Hongshan District, Zhongnan Hospital and Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital of Hubei Province were invited to the event and presented flowers to nurse representatives to extend their greetings.

Wang Shijie, WUT’s Vice President, fully affirmed WUT Hospital’s contributions in COVID-19 prevention and control and extended greetings to diligent nurses in his address. He stated that current pandemic situation across the country was severe, making Skills Contest of Nucleic Acid Sampling highly relevant and important. Wang reminded all faculty and students, especially medical workers, of strengthening consciousness of preparedness and response, and always remaining vigilant to the virus. He required the Hospital to constantly enhance emergency response capacity in daily practice, and try to build a professional, flexible and well-guided medical team that could provide faculty and students with sound services.

WUT attached great importance to the nucleic acid sampling and the Contest. Prior to the Contest, organization campaign, advanced training and preliminary rounds selection were conducted, and 18 nurses were selected from Departments of internal medicine, surgery, nursing, medical tech, public health and pharmacy to the final. Judges assessed nurses’ practices of getting protective suits on and off, throat swab sampling and medical waste treatment, and quantified their performances according to medical norms and standards for hand hygiene, protective suits, throat swab sampling, disinfection and medical waste treatment and occupational exposure. The final winners were awarded.

The skill contest, a special way to celebrate the International Nurses Day, greatly inspired medical workers to stay kind, patient, careful and responsible. At the same time, the practice and emergency response capacity of sampling workers were further strengthened, laying a solid foundation for normalized pandemic control and mass nucleic acid sampling in the future.
