Symposium on Collaborative Innovative Development among WUT, Industries and Regions-the 4th Plenary of the 1st Council of WUT Alumni Association

  Nov. 4th, the Symposium on Collaborative Innovative Development among WUT, Industries and Regions as well as the 4th Plenary of the 1st Council of WUT Alumni Association was held. It is aimed at pooling the wisdom and strength of the vast majority of the alumni and seizing the key opportunity of “attracting intellectual and capital investment to Wuhan by millions of alumni” so as to promote the collaborative innovative development of both WUT and the alumni. Reps from unit council members of the construction engineering and materials industry, from boards of directors of the transportation industry and the automotive industry, alumni reps, WUT leaders, academicians, chiefs of secondary units of the University, faculty and student reps attended the meeting which was chaired by Prof. Xin Sijin, Party Secretary of the University.

  President Zhang Qinjie gave a keynote report titled Vigorously Promoting the Collaborative Development between Industries and Regions, expediting WUT’s Dual First-Class Program and striving to build WUT into a world-class university. The report accentuates four key perspectives: 1) the distinctive features and development levels of WUT; 2) university philosophy and strategies; 3) governance and reforms; 4) disciplinary construction and imperative tasks. He introduced the amazing achievements in reforms and development of the University since its merger 15 years ago, and portrayed an inspiring blueprint of how WUT will accelerate its development into a distinctive world-class university in the years ahead. President Zhang stressed that on the occasion of the victorious closing of the 19th National Congress of CPC, the symposium is intended to congest the wisdom and strength of leading entrepreneurs in the three mainstay industriesconstruction, transportation and automobile, of strategic talents from home and abroad and, of distinguished alumni from across the globe. In this way, key issues concerning the collaborative innovative development of the University, the regions, the industries, the enterprises and the alumni can be discussed for an all-win and mutually beneficial result. Looking into the brilliant future, President Zhang called on alumni from all walks of life to sustain their care and support for the development of the University and all the WUTers to unite as one and work harder to promote the University’s reforms and development, thereby building it into a preeminent world-class university!

  Six distinguished alumni reps addressed successively the meeting, expressing their close care for and excitement at the tremendous triumphs of their alma mater, earnestly sharing their valuable experience and advice on how to deepen university-enterprise collaborative innovations as well as the University’s reform and development initiatives. They are Yao Yan, Deputy President of China Building Materials Group, Song Hailiang, member of the Party Standing Committee and Deputy General Manager of China Traffic Construction Group, Yu Zenggang, Party Committee member and Deputy General Manager of China Ocean Shipping Group, Zeng Jin, General Manager of BBMG Group, Yuan Zhijun, President of Guangxi Automobile Group and Zhang Guoliang, President of Lianyungang Eagle Textile Machinery Group.

  Vice President Zeng Cunnian, on behalf of the 1st council of WUT Alumni Association, gave a work report titled Striving to Improve Alumni Work through All-win Collaborative Development, which reviews the missions accomplished since the 3rd plenary of the Association, particularly the effective measures taken in such four areas as expanding branches of the Association, ameliorating liaisons between and service for alumni, boosting regional and WUT’s development and enriching activities for alumni. Zeng prioritized four tasks on the agenda: 1) expanding alumni organizations; 2) exploring new mechanism for the joint development of the University and its alumni; 3) upgrading IT application to alumni work; 4) livening up the cultural atmosphere for alumni. Through these steps he hopes to see an enhanced cohesion among the alumni who will show an increasingly deep affection for their alma mater.

  President Zhang Qinjie conferred the Certificate of Entrepreneurial Adviser to eight eminent alumni who are expected to offer orienting, professional and practical guidance for WUT students engaged in entrepreneurship, enhancing their innovative and business starting-up capabilities and WUT’s work in this regard. The conferees include Zhang Guoliang, President of Lianyungang Eagle Textile Machinery Group, Liu Nan, President of Bestway Marine & Energy Technology, Lu Zongjun, President of Zhonggu Shipping Group, Yu Xindong, President of Hubei TKD Crystal Electronic Science and Technology, Xu Junru, General Manager of CDHT Investment, Zhou Kui, fund partner of Sequoia Capital China, Xu Maodong, President of Galaxy World and Liu Guofang, Executive Director of China Center for Market Value Management.

  WUT Party Secretary Xin Sijin concluded the conference. He pointed out that the just closed 19th National Congress of CPC had proposed a series of new thoughts, ideas and strategies that are in line with the new requirements of the current times and serve as a compass for the collaborative innovative development of the University, the regions and the industries as well as the alumni work. Prof. Xin stressed that the 3rd Party Congress of WUT has explicitly designated supporting the country, the regions and the three mainstay industries as a goal for the next five or more years. It also vows to serve the alumni wholeheartedly, making the alma mater their soul haven and solid backup for career development. All these pledges fully demonstrate the University’s great concern for the aforementioned work. Xin highly praised and deeply appreciated the valuable experience and constructive advice shared by the alumni, believing that they will further promote the synergy between the University and enterprises.  

  Then, the annual meeting for the industrial council of construction materials and engineering, the annual meeting for the board of directors of the transportation industry, the alumni meeting for the automotive industry were held in three parallel sessions, which were attended by WUT leaders. Party Secretary Xin emphasized in the transportation session that the grandiose blueprint for WUT development cannot dispense with the substantial support of the trustee units, alumni, enterprises, industries as well as the striving of faculties and students.The ongoing WUT session for attracting intellectual and capital investment has gained tremendous support from alumni and boards in the transportation industry; such deep affection is the great inspiration and wealth for the development of the University. In the construction session, President Zhang advised the council establish more service platforms for its unit members and the teaching reform of the University adapt to the needs of industrial upgrading. He also encouraged efforts to explore a trans-industrial co-operative mechanism so as to promote the technological progress of the industries and the long-term development of the University. WUT Deputy Party Secretary Wang Qiankun gave a report for the 3rd Congress of the Council. The annual meeting witnessed the reshuffling of the council members for the next term and, examined and passed a new scheme for internal management. WUT Deputy Party Secretary Xia Jiangjin addressed the automobile session, stressing that without the industrial needs for talents and technologies and the vigorous support of the industry, the rapid development and the reputation of WUT today would be impossible. He expressed heartfelt thanks to alumni in the automobile industry for constantly supporting and caring the development of the University.

  Participants discussed heatedly and constructively on the topic of university-industry synergy, including the further establishment of a co-operative platform, reforming the teaching mode to fit the industrial needs, exploring new mechanisms of collaborating industries, teaching and research, and carrying out inter-industrial co-operation, thus portraying together an even brilliant future for the collaborative innovative development between the University, industries and regions.
