Abstract:
Achieving aerodynamic reduction and high cooling performance in road vehicles are challenging as they are closely linked to fuel savings and emission reduction. In this talk, the potential aerodynamic drag reductions and cooling performance improvement that can be achieved by detailed design of components which are not influenced by stylistic constraints, will be elaborated. The discussion will be focused on the vehicle underside; reductions in the (high drag) cooling losses associated with cooling flows, particularly through the radiator; internal shaping and volumes of wheel arches. The potential drag reductions and improvement of cooling effectiveness that could arise by running vehicles in very close convoys (also known as platoons) will also be highlighted.
