Biography:
Prof. Hortense LE FERRAND, Associate Professor of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, joined the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and School of Materials science and Engineering in 2019. Her research combines sustainable manufacturing with hierarchical microstructures to create high performance materials using bioinspiration. In 2020, Hortense was awarded the National Research Foundation (NRF) Fellowship from Singapore which comes with a grant of 3 M S$ to carry research on bioinspired composites. In 2023, Hortense was listed among the MIT innovators under 35, Europe list, and received the Nanyang Research award, Young investigator, from her university and the Nature awards, inspiring women in science, scientific achievement category from Nature Springer.
Abstract:
In this talk, you will learn about the current research on sustainable processes for advanced materials, specifically about the 3D printing of ceramics using aqueous-based direct-ink writing, how bioinspired microstructures in composites and ceramics can induce interesting and unusual properties, how carefully designed microstructures can also create high performance multifunctional materials and finally how to create biodegradable and natural composites and their advantage for a sustainable future. Finally, besides the technical content of the talk, you will also get inputs and tips on how to create an innovative research group with advices on how to define the research focus and on fostering an innovative an inclusive research group.
