On October 26th, the 32nd International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering (ISSRE 2021), opened in East Lake International Conference Center, Wuhan. Experts and scholars from universities, research institutes and enterprises at home and abroad gathered in Wuhan to discuss and exchange thoughtsabout scientific research and industrial development in the field of software reliability engineering.

The ISSRE 2021 was hosted by WUT and jointly organized by IEEE Computer Society, IEEE Reliability Society, China Computer Federation Technical Committee of System Software, CCF Technical Committee of Software Engineering, Huawei Technologies, China Electronic Product Reliability and Environmental Testing Research Institute (CEPREI) and other units.

The Honorary General Chairs of ISSRE 2021 are Hong Mei of Peking University, who is Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of CCF, and Jian Lyu, who is Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of Nanjing University. The co-chairman of the symposiun is Professor Xiang Jianwen form School of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence of WUT.

Chen Wen, Vice President of WUT, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. He pointed out that in recent years, with the further development of the Internet of Things, cloud computing, big data and artificial intelligence applications, software and software disciplines are facing major challenges of unprecedented system complexity and reliability requirements, as well as major opportunities for new software reliability engineering theory and technological changes. He hoped that the participating experts and scholars would discuss freely and learn from each other, to contribute collective efforts to the sustainable development of software reliability engineering technology.

ISSRE is the premier conference on software reliability engineering and a high-level academic conference recommended by China Computer Society (CCF-B). The conference was held in mainland China for the first time over the past 30 years. The number of contributions and participants in the conference reached a record high, attracting more than 300 experts and scholars in the field of software reliability from 28 countries, such as China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Canada, Italy, Russia, Brazil and India to participate on site or through online platforms.

The conference invited more than 30 prestigious scholars and industrial elites as speakers, including Joseph Sifakis (2007 Turing Award winner, Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), Gail C Murphy (Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, ACM Fellow), Michael R. Lyu (ACM/IEEE/HKIE/AAAS Fellow, Changjiang Distinguished Professorship), Xie Tao (IEEE/AAAS Fellow), Andreas Zeller (ACM Fellow), Ahmed E. Hassan (IEEE Fellow), Hu Zheng (Director of Reliability Advanced Technology Lab, Huawei) and Michael Paulitsch (Chief Engineer of Intel).

At the meeting, Professor Xie Tao of Peking University (AAAs fellow, IEEE fellow) made a special report entitled Intelligent Software Engineering for High-Confidence  Software: Interdisciplinary Research of Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering. Zhang Jian, a researcher from the Institute of software of Chinese Academy of Sciences, made a special report entitled Program Analysis. Hu Zheng, director of Reliability Advanced Technology Lab, Huawei, made a special report entitled Exploring the Way to Reliable Intelligent Systems. Professor Yuriy Brun of the University of Massachusetts Amherst gave a special report entitled Social Differences Caused by Software and Solutions to Avoid Them. Dr. Michael Paulitsch, the chief engineer of Intel, made a special report entitled Software: Exploring Security Issues Effectively Combined With Machine Learning Methods.

In addition to the research forum and industry forum in the main venue, the conference also has a number of special seminars, including software aging and regeneration, software certification, reliability and safety data analysis, software defects, software and hardware interaction defects, management adaptive systems and unplanned systems, microservices and Artificial Intelligence for IT Operations, advanced driving assistance systems, reliable system software, modeling and design for reliability , cyber physical system, machine learning, software security, as well as doctoral student forum, new teacher forum, quick summary, technical lectures and so on. Experts and scholars carried out extensive and in-depth academic exchanges and discussions on software reliability and security in the era of cloud computing, artificial intelligence and big data.

It is reported that ISSRE 2021 is the first top international academic symposium in the field of software engineering held by WUT. School of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence of WUT has been allowed to grant doctoral degree in the first-class discipline of Computer Science and Technology and has the center for post-doctoral studies. Besides, characteristic research directions, such as trusted secure Internet of things technology, artificial intelligence theory and algorithm, have been set and a trusted secure computing laboratory with Professor Xiang Jianwen’s team as the core has been established. By holding this symposium, WUT further enhanced its connection with experts and scholars in this field, further promoted its construction of computer science and technology, software engineering and other related disciplines, made positive contributions to the scientific research and industrial development in the field of software reliability engineering, and improved the influence of the university at home and abroad.
