From June 11th to 12th, the 13th International Conference on Ceramic Materials and Components for Energy and Environmental Applications (CMCEE-13) was held in WUT. The series of CMCEE were initiated and held since the 1980s and enjoyed a high reputation in the world. This conference was hosted by Wuhan University of Technology (WUT), co-organized by Interdisciplinary Materials and the Youth Committee of Chinese Ceramic Society, and jointly supported by the World Academy of Ceramics (WAC), the American Ceramic Society (ACS) and the Global Alliance of Technology and Associations.

Online attendees of this conference included Professor Mrityunjay Singh, President of the WAC, Academician Zhang Qingjie of WUT, Professor Tatsuki Ohji, Former President of the American Ceramic Society, Professor Alexander Michaelis, President of the German Ceramic Society, Professor Palani Balaya, Aacademician of WAC, Professor John Wang of the National University of Singapore, Cheng Huiming, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nie Zuoren and Dong Shaoming, Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). Attendees present at the conference included Yang Zongkai, President of WUT, Fu Zhengyi, Academician of CAE and Wang Fazhou, Vice President of WUT, heads of International Office, State Key Laboratory of Advanced Technology for Materials Synthesis and Processing, State Key Laboratory of Silicate Materials for Architecture, School of Materials Science and Engineering, International School of Materials Science and Engineering and some representatives of teachers and students. The opening ceremony of the conference was presided over by researcher Wang Jingyang, Academician of WAC. Academician Cheng Huiming, Academician Nie Zuoren, Academician Dong Shaoming, Professor John Wang, researcher Wang Jingyang and Professor Mai Liqiang made the conference reports, and 63 internationally renowned scholars made the invitation reports. The conference was held both online and offline with more than 100,000 online attendees worldwide and more than 6500 attendees at the main venue at the peak concurrent.

President Yang Zongkai gave an oration for the opening ceremony, expressed warm congratulations on the opening of CMCEE-13, and extended warm welcome and heartfelt thanks to all the guests attending the conference. Then, President Yang introduced the characteristics and cutting edges of the preponderant discipline of WUT, Materials Science and Engineering, as well as the background and significance of the CMCEE series of international conferences. He also pointed out that this conference was a high-end academic platform where participants exchanged ideas and held discussions on the sustainable development of ceramic science with world-renowned experts. He wished the conference a great success, thus contributing to the development of Materials Science and Engineering.

On behalf of the international support units of the conference, Professor Mrityunjay Singh, the Honorary President of the conference, delivered a speech. He pointed out that the development of the material field in recent years had carried considerable clout with the energy and environment of the world. Scientific researchers should not only focus on the research of the material field itself, but also extend their attention to various fields of the world. Professor Mrityunjay Singh also announced that the CMCEE-14 would be held in Budapest, the capital of Hungary, in 2024.

Academician Fu Zhengyi, the chairman of the conference, delivered a speech where he pointed out that this conference gathered many experts and scholars in the material field at home and abroad who would conduct discussions and exchanges respectively in the three thematic sub-venues of the energy ceramics, the environmental ceramics and the frontier technology of advanced materials.  At the same time, as the chief editor of Interdisciplinary Materials, he mentioned that the purpose of this periodical was to promote the cross integration of materials and other disciplines, exactly echoing the theme of this conference.

The conference had three thematic sub-venues, respectively on the energy ceramics, the environmental ceramics and the frontier technology of advanced materials. Experts and scholars at home and abroad held discussions and exchanged ideas on the cross fields of new materials such as solar cells, energy storage, photocatalysis, thermoelectric conversion, semiconductors, sensors, 3D printing, and the emerging of inorganic and non-metallic traditional materials such as cement, glass, ceramics.

The successful holding of this conference further cemented the close relationship between WUT and experts and scholars at home and abroad, promoted the construction and development of materials and related disciplines, and expanded the international academic influence of WUT.
