On November 4, Adora Magic City, the first large homegrown cruise ship, was officially named and delivered at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Terminal. Representatives of the General Office of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, the National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Transportation, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, China Media Group, Shanghai Committee, Municipal Government and relevant commissions offices and administrations, central financial enterprises, and colleges and domestic and international partners in the cruise industry chain, attended the naming and delivery ceremony. On behalf of WUT, Xin Sijin, Secretary of the Party Committee of WUT, and Wu Weiguo, Chief Professor of Ship and Ocean Engineering, were invited to participate in the ceremony due to the university’s contribution to the high-quality R&D of the large cruise ship.
A large cruise ship is considered an integrator in the industrial field, representing highly systematic and integrated mega-system engineering projects, whichis the crystallization of the modern industry and culture and arts. Also, it is an embodiment of the national manufacturing industry and comprehensive technological capabilities. The delivery of the large cruise marks that China has become the world's fifth country that is able to build a large cruise ship and that China has once again succeeded in the world shipbuilding industry. To date, China has been able to build an aircraft carrier, a large liquefied natural gas carrier, and a large cruise ship -- the most challenging shipbuilding projects.
The cruise ship, Adora Magic City, with a gross tonnage of 135,500 tonnes, measures 323.6 meters in length, 37.2 meters in width, 8.26 meters in design draft, and 72.2 meters in the maximum height. The ship carries 107 systems and 55,000 pieces of equipment, including 25 million components and parts, 4750 kilometers of cables, 365 kilometers of pipes, and 120 kilometers of ducts. It can accommodate up to 5,246 passengers and has a total of 2,125 guest rooms. Equipped with a 16-story, 40,000-square-meter publicliving and entertainment area, Adora Magic City is hailed as a "modern city on the sea."
By organizing a number of interdisciplinary research teams of advantageous disciplines, WUT has undertaken the research tasks of providing the cruise ship aesthetic design technology, developing the 130,000 gross tonnage large cruise ship engineering, and researching the cruise ship general arrangement design technology, cruise ship vibration and noise control technology, and cruise ship safe return to port design technology. Thereinto, WUT has made outstanding contributions to key technologies such as the center control of the cruise weight, safe return to port, and vibration and noise control, promoting the high-quality R&D of China's first large cruise ship. Wu Weiguo, Chief Professor of Ship and Ocean Engineering, has been appointed as a member of the expert group for the assessment of the national large cruise ship innovation project, and has participated in the assessment and development of the large cruise ship in the whole process.
