“The most significant highlight is the proposal of the concept of ‘The First Year of Smart Education.’ The educational scenario has evolved beyond traditional teacher-student interactions. With the introduction of machines, a third role has been added, creating a new educational context involving teachers, machines, and students. According to reports, the 2024 World Conference on MOOCs and Online Education was held in London, UK, from December 12 to 13, Beijing time. Jointly organized by the Global Alliance for MOOCs and Online Education, UNESCO, and the Institute for Information Technologies in Education, the conference convened 340 representatives from 135 universities, online education platforms, international organizations, and government agencies spanning 28 countries and regions.
Focusing on the theme of “Reconstructing Future Higher Education in the Intelligent Age,” the conference brought together experts in educational digitalization to exchange insights and explore the future trajectory of digital transformation in higher education. The conference introduced the concept of the global higher education entering the “Era of Smart Education” for the first time, and released two key reports: the “World Higher Education Digitalization Development Report 2024” and the “World Higher Education Digitalization Development Index 2024,” along with typical application scenarios for smart education. Additionally, a frontier exhibition of educational digitalization achievements showcased the latest global advancements in this field. The conference also announced that the Edraak platform from Jordan and the Monterrey Institute of Technology from Mexico have joined the World MOOC and Online Education Alliance as new members.
According to the introduction, the World MOOC and Online Education Alliance is the first international multilateral organization in the field of higher education digitalization, initiated and led by China. It currently consists of 16 world-leading universities from 16 countries across 6 continents and 7 online education institutions. Since its establishment, the alliance has hosted five World MOOC and Online Education Conferences, becoming an important platform for sharing high-quality resources, exchanging development experiences, and fostering international consensus among various countries.
